Enrollment Periods and How to Enroll
Enrolling in an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan is limited to specific periods throughout the year. The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the first opportunity for most people to enroll, which begins three months before you turn 65, includes your birth month, and ends three months after.
This seven-month period is vital for securing your Medicare Advantage plan without penalties.
The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, is another significant enrollment opportunity. During this period, you can:
- Switch, drop, or join a Medicare Advantage plan
- Review your current plan and compare it to other options
- Ensure you are getting the best coverage for your needs
It’s a good idea to take advantage of the AEP and make any necessary changes to your Medicare Advantage plan.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) are available for those who experience qualifying life events, such as moving out of your plan’s service area or losing employer coverage.
These periods allow you to make changes to your Medicare Advantage plan outside the usual enrollment windows. To enroll, you can apply online through the Aetna website, over the phone, or via a paper application.
Coverage and Benefits
Aetna Medicare Advantage plans are designed to offer comprehensive coverage and a range of benefits that go beyond what Original Medicare provides.
For new enrollees, Aetna Medicare Advantage plans include a one-time ‘Welcome to Medicare’ visit within the first 12 months of having Medicare Part B, at no cost to the patient. This visit is an excellent opportunity to establish a health baseline with your doctor and discuss any preventive services you may need.
Additionally, Annual Wellness Visits are available for members who have had Medicare Part B for longer than 12 months. These visits play a pivotal role in preventive screenings, cognitive impairment testing, and the development of a personalized prevention plan.
Beyond these essential services, Aetna Medicare Advantage plans often include additional benefits such as:
- Dental services, including routine exams and cleanings, with some plans offering reimbursement for costs up to the plan’s coverage amount
- Vision services, including an annual routine eye exam at no extra cost
- Hearing services, including an annual hearing check and coverage for hearing aids
