Enrollment Periods for BCBSID Medicare Advantage Plans
Understanding when to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan is crucial. There are specific enrollment periods, including the Initial Enrollment Period, Open Enrollment Period, and Special Enrollment Period, during which you can enroll in, change, or leave a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Initial Enrollment Period
The Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month window that starts three months before you turn 65, includes your birth month, and extends three months after, during which you can join a Medicare Advantage Plan.
If you’re under 65 and on Social Security disability, the Initial Enrollment Period starts 22 months after you start receiving disability benefits and lasts for 7 months.
During this period, you can join a Medicare Advantage Plan without having to provide evidence of insurability or undergoing medical underwriting. However, it’s important to note that eligibility to join a plan during the Initial Enrollment Period requires having both Part A and Part B of Medicare.
The coverage for the plan begins on the same day as your Medicare if enrollment occurs before your Medicare coverage starts. If enrollment occurs after, coverage starts on the first of the month after enrollment is received.
Open Enrollment Period
The Open Enrollment Period, also known as the Annual Election Period, runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. During this time, if you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can switch to a different plan or go back to Original Medicare. Any changes made during this period take effect from January 1 of the following year.
The Open Enrollment Period provides the perfect opportunity to assess your healthcare needs and explore new plan options. It’s important to differentiate between Medicare “Parts” and “Plans”, as Parts are components of Medicare whereas Plans are specific insurance products offered by private companies like BCBSID.
Comparing different types of Medicare Advantage plans, like HMO and PPO plans, can be beneficial in finding the best fit for your needs.
Special Enrollment Periods
Special Enrollment Periods are triggered by specific life events such as relocating to a new area, losing current coverage, or becoming eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. These periods provide you with the opportunity to enroll in a new Medicare Advantage Plan.
During a Special Enrollment Period, coverage begins on the first day of the month after the plan receives your enrollment request. You typically have 60 days from the date of the qualifying event to enroll in a new plan.
It’s essential to note that documentation confirming the qualifying life event may be required before enrollment. Not all events qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, so it’s crucial to understand the conditions that can trigger these periods.
